PolarFESTIVAL
During the IPY-OSC, on the 9th and the 10th of June, there will be a public PolarFESTIVAL in the Oslo city centre. Parts of the square in front of the Oslo Town Hall are reserved for this event. The PolarFESTIVAL will be a particularly suitable arena for showing how scientific activities are carried out in polar areas, the equipment needed to get there, survive there, make observations and collect data.
The PolarFESTIVAL will held in one of the most attractive public sites in the city centre. During summer the City Hall Square, Aker Brygge and the rest the harbour is very popular with tourists and locals alike.
The festival aims to showcase some polar science relevant activities to the general public. You can experience Sami food and hide production, see the exhibition "Polar Norway", attend the show "Hunting high for polar lows", and see how space technology and unmanned aircrafts help polar science.
Tents will be put up along the quay to accommodate exhibits and booths. Research vessels docked and anchored in the bay will attract both participants in the conference and the public. On Wednesday the 9th all participants will pass through the area in the afternoon on their way to the barbeque. High school students from the area have been invited.
Several research vessels will visit Oslo during the conference:
• Norway's newest vessel, G.O.Sars, is open to the public Wednesday 9 June at 11.00 to 14:00, and on Thursday 10 June at 10:00 to 12:00. There will also be other IPY-OSC activities onboard.
