IPY Open science in St.Petersburg

SCAR and IASC has invited the IPY family to a first global get-together in St.Petersburg, Russia, July 8th - 11th 2008. The reunion is already planned in Oslo two years from now, and another will be held in Canada in 2012.
Most IPY scientists are still in the field collecting data this Arctic summer or the next Antarctic season. It is thus too early to present results from most of the endorsed projects.
The conference i St.Petersburg is the XXX SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research)Meeting, this time held jointly with the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and in association with IPY.
The IPY Joint Committee has endorsed this event as a SCAR/IASC IPY Open Science Conference - the first in a series of international interdisciplinary IPY conferences. It is therefore cosponsored by the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
Close to 1500 participants arec expected. The 35 sessions will take place in the Pribaltiskaya Hotel and at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI). The theme in St.Petersburg is "Polar Research - Arctic and Antarctic Perspectives in the International Polar Year". A series of business meetings are planned in connection with the conference.
