The Climate Pilgrimage cruise with MS Fram to Svalbard attracted almost 200 passengers. We do not know, however, exactly how many that are conference participants. The Glaciers and Fjords excursion also have suficient participation, but can accomodate a few more. The Sami Experience excursion has just been announced.
Pre-conference: Climate Pilgrimage
Probably the most exciting of these will be a cruise with the coast liner MS Fram to Svalbard from 30th May until 7th June. A scientific program will be offered to passengers on board and in each port of call. The cruise is branded "Climate Pilgrimage 2010". It is not exclusive for IPY-OSC participants, but registered participants for will be able to attend the cruise at a special discounted rate. Post-conference excursion No.1: Glaciers and Fjords
Excursion to Western Norway, a five days guided tour along the scenic route to glaciers and fjords. This excursion will combine the pleasures of tourism with insights into hydro power, glacial history, glaciology and avalanche research. It will not be very demanding physically, but participants are recommended to bring along good hiking shoes and allclothing.
The excursion is organised by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, with contribution from the Universities of Bergen and Oslo, the Norwegian Glacier Museum and the Research Council of Norway. Cost per person is NOK 5500 (about USD930 or EUR690). Read more and register here.
Post-conference excursion No.2: Sami Experience
Three unforgettable days of experience in Sapmi, Finnmark. You will visit the historical Sautso dam, enjoy a magnificent traditional sami meal and guiding in a lavvu, see the famous 6000 year old carvings and paintings on rock, traditional river fishing and history lecture at Sami University College.
