Polar expedition to the FRAM Museum

About 1500 researchers got together last night at the Bygdøy peninsula just outside of Oslo for an IPY-barbeque, and a visit to the FRAM Museum.
The polar researchers, students and teachers were transported by boat to visit the historic exhibition at the museum, which describes the three great FRAM-expeditions.
The audience also got an opportunity to explore the expeditions of Amundsen´s vessels Gjøa and the Maud, of the airplanes N24 and N25, as well as the airship Norge.
In addition The National Maritime Museum’s panorama film ”The Ocean – a way of life” took the researchers on a cruise along the fantastic Norwegian coast.

Polar exhibition
Before the IPY-barbeque, many of the visitors took the opportunity to visit the Polar Festival at the square in front of the City Hall. The festival showcased activities relevant to polar science. The public had, among other things, the chance to experience Sámi food and animal hide production, the photo exhibition Polar Norway and the show Hunting high for polar lows.

At the harbor nearby, Norway’s newest research vessel G.O. Sars and the polish sailing boat Oceania were open for visits by the public. Another research vessels visiting Oslo during the conference were the Norwegian Coast Guard vessel KV Aalesund.
