Yesterday 400 applicants got their Oslo stipends. Early career scientists are granted free lodging and reduced conference fee. One third of them had accepted within 24 hours.
The list of recipients is dominated by Canada and USA (147), Russia (47) and European polar nations (Germany, UK, Norway, Poland - 96). More than 60% of the recipients are women.
Remarkable process
Altogether 651 applications have been processed in record time, thanks to the stipend committee:
Sara Bowden, Barry Goodison, Øystein Hov, Mike Sparrow, Paul Cutler, Angelika Renner, Hugues Lantuit, Jeronimo Lopez, Dave Carlson, Jose Xavier, Heidi Swanson, Nazune Menka, Daniela Haase Liggett, and Mare Pit
Altogether 850 applications were submitted, but 200 were siphoned of to the PolarTEACHERS committee. They will announce their stipends on Monday.
NoneThe Director of APECS, Dr. Jenny Baeseman, is overly satisfied with the process and the outcome.- I am amazed by the number of applicants, the receptiveness of the reviewers to take on this huge task, and the fairness of the process, says Jenny Baeseman, director of APECS. - We have seen remarkable evenness amongst reviewer scores, and this shows that the evaluation criteria set froth by APECS and approved by the steering committee really held up strong. The dataset we have tells us a lot about where and how we should concentrate our efforts towards supporting the leaders of IPY 5 in 2032.
An unprecendented amount of support
- We are incredibly grateful to the Research Council of Norway for allotting funds for 400 stipends to early career researchers for this conference. This is an unprecedented amount of support for those of us starting our careers in polar research. Norway has taken a leading role internationally in supporting the future of polar research, writes Jenny Baeseman in the APECs letter to applicants.
Letters of acceptance is flooding in. - It is an honour to accept this award and I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the sponsor and for your support in making this possible, writes Chiu-Pih Tan, PhD Candidate at Lincoln University in New Zealand. - That is fantastic news! I would definitely like to accept the student stipend - and I look forward to the meeting in Oslo, writes Sheri Harper from Ontario.
