400 stipends distributed to early career polar scientists
Yesterday 400 applicants got their Oslo stipends. Early career scientists are granted free lodging and reduced conference fee. One third of them had accepted within 24 hours.
The list of recipients is dominated by Canada and USA (147), Russia (47) and European polar nations (Germany, UK, Norway, Poland - 96). More than 60% of the recipients are women.
Remarkable process
Altogether 651 applications have been processed in record time, thanks to the stipend committee:
Sara Bowden, Barry Goodison, Øystein Hov, Mike Sparrow, Paul Cutler, Angelika Renner, Hugues Lantuit, Jeronimo Lopez, Dave Carlson, Jose Xavier, Heidi Swanson, Nazune Menka, Daniela Haase Liggett, and Mare Pit
Altogether 850 applications were submitted, but 200 were siphoned of to the PolarTEACHERS committee. They will announce their stipends on Monday.

The dataset we have tells us a lot about where and how we should concentrate our efforts towards supporting the leaders of IPY 5 in 2032.
An unprecendented amount of support
- We are incredibly grateful to the Research Council of Norway for allotting funds for 400 stipends to early career researchers for this conference. This is an unprecedented amount of support for those of us starting our careers in polar research. Statistics
Stipends were given based on the % of applicants in each session. This assured that stipends were given to young researchers in each session of the conference and accurately reflected the energy and excitement of young researchers for the various topics in each session.
