Unique opportunity for science teachers
PolarTEACHERS is a great offer to 120 lucky teachers from all over the world. Karl Thorstein Hetland and the rest of the committee encourages teachers and educators to take advantage of this unique opportunity to meet with colleagues and the most prominent polar scientists worldwide.
Educators and science teachers with an interest for polar sciences are invited to the international PolarTEACHERS programme in Oslo, June 6-12, 2010. PolarTEACHERS is part of IPY-Oslo Science Conference. The offer includes pre-service teachers.
- As participant you will meet teachers from all over the world and together we will explore new ways to use polar science in the classroom, says Karl Thorstein Hetland. He is coordinating the planning.
The teachers will meet two days before the science conference for an introductory programme. During the science conference participants will have full access to the conference programme, which includes 39 science sessions and wide array of education and outreach activities, a polar film cinema, a polar festival, expo and attractive social events.
Karl Thorstein Hetland has many years of experience from organising national and international science education activities. During IPY he was in charge of the Norwegian polar education programme and organised a number of highly attractive teachers courses in Svalbard and in Sapmi. - We can promise an inspiring experience. We will combine fun with the useful, like introduction to hands-on educational tools, he says.
Hetland underlines that conditions for selected participants are favourable: Reduced conference registration fee of EURO 245 (full registration fee is EURO 490).
- This fee covers accommodation in Oslo from Saturday June 5 until Saturday June 12. The fee also covers two dinners as well as breakfast and lunch from Sunday to Saturday. Participants will also receive a copy of the new IPY resource book "Polar Science and Global Climate". An application formula for travel assistance will be sent to the selected participants. You will get the stipend when you attend the conference.
There are two ways to be selected:
- Present a paper at the EOC parallel session at OSC2010 by submitting an abstract on a project or activity done during IPY.
- Write an application describing how you plan to use polar science in your classroom. Submit the application as an abstract for the session Teacher conference.
Application deadline January 20, 2010.
